▲ Serious Drugs

'If I could be in any other band it would be BMX Bandits' - Kurt Cobain, New York City Radio, 1993.

Serious Drugs is an endearing look inside the world of Duglas Stewart and the BMX Bandits.

The title is the Bandits’ best-known song, in which Stewart pleads for the love of a girl who advises him to up his meds.

An intimate portrait of the Bandits’ main man, the film explores the mix of fragility and strength that informs Stewart’s life, music, and his struggles with depression.

First time filmmaker Jim Burns discovered the music of the BMX Bandits during a period of heavy depression in his life. While listening to a Bandits song, Burns thought “This guy understands what it’s like to be lonely.” An incredibly personal project for Burns, the film was shot over a four year period following Stewart and his fellow Bandits, interspersed with rare footage and photos from their 25 year career.

Throughout the film, it becomes clear that the music and creative outlet provide great solace for musician and filmmaker. Burns captures the spirit and desire of Stewart to communicate the thoughts and emotions often swirling in his head.

Those who endure their own sleepless nights will easily identify with the struggle to want to scream and shout aloud. Stewart chooses to do so through shimmery indie pop songs. The music is autobiographical. It’s where Stewart is at in a particular time. If it’s in a good place, the songs reflect it. It’s almost like therapy.

▲ Lenzie Moss

Lenzie Moss AKA Finlay Macdonald was previously a member of Music and Movement, Teenage Fanclub, BMX Bandits and Speedboat and has just released the excellent new album Introducing Lenzie Moss on New Town Records.

▲ Nick Garrie

Nick Garrie debuted with 'The Nightmare of JB Stanislas', a psychedelic folk album in 1969, one of the most mysterious and sought after albums ever, a masterpiece of dark and enigmatic downer orchestral folk-rock beauty redolent of Nick Drake.

Copies of this magical record were an ultra rare collectors piece and the album was admired for decades, (so much so that Leonard Cohen praised the album and asked Nick to join him on a tour) before the reissue's on Rev-Ola and more recently Elephant Records brought his music to a contemporary audience.

The scarce musical activity of this British composer re-emerges today thanks to the participation of the well known Scottish indie pop scene: Duglas T. Stewart (BMX Bandits), Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub), Ally Kerr and the entourage of musicians who rendered their services to record Nick's album 49 Arlington Gardens, 40 years after his debut release.

▲ Cineplexx

Cineplexx has just released the great new album Perfume and previous releases include collaborations with Duglas Stewart (BMX Bandits), Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub), Stealing Sheep, Nigel Baillie (Camera Obscura) and Stu Kidd (The Wellgreen/Jonny).

Sebastian Litmanovich from Cineplexx will be playing his favourite indie pop records at this show.

▲ CALM

The campaign against living miserably (CALM) exists to prevent male suicide in the UK. Suicide accounted for the deaths of more young men in England & Wales in 2011 than road death, murder and HIV/AIDs combined.

CALM’s unique men’s lifestyle magazine, CALMzine, is a free publication produced with the support of Topman and available at their stores, student unions and select music and cultural venues across inner London.
